About the skin structure
To use Anti-Ageing products effectively, you must first know your skin's structure. The diagram below shows the layers of your skin. Your skin is divided into three main layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and the subcutaneous tissue. The epidermis is the one we can see. In the epidermis, sebum and sweat mix to form a natural cream of sebum film. This sebaceous film makes the skin smooth, prevents it from drying out, and protects it from dust and harmful bacteria which protects the skin. In the stratum corneum of the epidermis, there are lipids called ceramides between the cells, and the skin's barrier to keep the cells moisturised. It is responsible for the function of ceramides. These ceramides are said to decrease with age and UV rays. The dermis contains collagen, hyaluronic acid, elastin, and other essential components that keep the skin moisturised and elastic. The subcutaneous tissue, which acts as a cushion, is subcutaneous fat.
Wrinkles and slackness are a concern with ageing. This appearance is mainly due to dryness and UV rays. While air conditioning has recently made life more comfortable throughout the year, our skin is continuously exposed to dryness. As the skin begins to dry out, the surface of the stratum corneum begins to dry out and peel off easily, and gaps begin to form. The water in the epidermis evaporates through these gaps, causing the water-depleted skin to become thinner and smaller to make wrinkles. When UV rays destroy the collagen and elastin in the dermis, the skin's elasticity and resilience are also reduced and cause wrinkles. Breakdown of collagen and elastin, which weakens the skin's ability to support the skin, or ageing causes muscle weakness. Skin sagging is a result of the gravitational pull of the skin. A decrease in turnover also causes dullness of the skin.
